I am an RN with 25 years of experience working with children with developmental, intellectual and physical disabilites. I currently work with a developmental pediatrician and have a special interest in children with autism spectrum disorders. I am also a travel consultant specializing in group cruises/vacations for families of children with ASD or other special needs. I am interested in learning what things parents of children with autism look for when planning a family vacation and also what kind of services/ activities they like to have provided when they travel. People can view my travel website at www.traveloptibilities.com. Thank you for providing this valuable website for families with children who have ASD!

I have a 10 year old daughter with Autism. My husband and I would love to go camping again, but every time we try our daughter has a serious meltdown. Can anyone suggest what they have done to prepare their child? Also, does anyone know of a campground in the Southern California area that is Autism friendly?
Thank you for your time.

Having a child with Autism presents many challenges, including planning and managing appropriate vacations for the WHOLE family. We are about to change all of that. Our mission is simple? to provide families that have a child with Autism necessary preparation, tools and support to have an enjoyable and memorable vacation for each and every family member! Beginning in the summer of 2011, we will begin the first of our hosted trips in Alaska and Costa Rica. Trips are inclusive; with lodging, meals and activities. Families will be able to customize each day with group and/or individual therapeutic opportunities.

Director and founder, Melissa Bridges (BA-Therapeutic Recreation, M.Ed-Special Education)and her support staff of teachers, occupational therapists and speech/language pathologists have spent decades specializing in the care and treatment of children that have Autism. Their expertise, along with the natural beauty and abundance of activities offered will keep your family in awe from the moment you step off the plane.

Our Alaska trip is located in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula and all of our activities are a short very scenic drive from our base located at Trail Lake Lodge in Moose Pass. While there, we will be given exclusive use of the pavilion that sits right on the shores of Trail Lake.

We love what we do and we love where we do it! So join us this summer in a place where pictures and words can only scratch the surface of what's waiting for your family to discover.

Any input please email me at benfesagaiga@train4autism.org Thank you.

My son is high functioning autistic and has difficulties with car rides more than 3 hours. His father doesn't want to understand this and plans on putting him in a car for more than 10 hrs. with almost no breaks soon. Where can I find information to give to him and to the courts to support what I am seeing/experiencing and my concerns of what will happen to my son if he hasn't been prepared for this and isn't ready to handle a long car like this?

Elizabeth - My heart goes out to you! Long car rides for any child are difficult despite the diagnosis of autism. I have a few recomendations. Please download my free ebook that has several suggestions for long car rides. Feel free to pass it along to your son's father. The suggestions are gathered from many parents who have driven distances with their typical and autistic children. One mother takes a 12 hour drive every summer with seven children -- three of whom are autistic!

I also have an article dedicated entirely to car rides. This article has been picked up by several parenting ezines.

The key to long car rides is preparation. What interests your son? Video games? Movies? Snacks? Books? And most of all be prepared to take breaks!

The suggestions on this website are valid for any child. Not just those with an autistic diagnosis.

I hope all goes well! Feel free to pass all of this information along.

Ann

I'm sorry, I do not have any statistical information to provide you. Only anecdotal evidence.

Michelle - From where you live, you can split the trip up and spend the night in the DC area - it is only seven hours away. There is also a great rest stop outside of Williamsburg with a Visitors Center and family restrooms. Stopping in Williamsburg is a good option as well. It is fairly easy to get to from the highway and will give you time to walk around (without paying a entry fee!) Once you pass through Norfolk, it is only an hour or two to Nags Head with plenty of stops on the way. Have fun!

Catherine - I had to laugh at your entry because it brought up memories of stories from other parents with the same situation! I am no looking forward to the teen years! Does you son like to help in planning with the route, maps, activities, etc?

Taking two trips this year- National Park road trip (summer) and flying to Europe (Christmas). My son is mid-level high functioning, but he's a teenage, now, so we have a-t-t-i-t-u-d-e problems. We also had problems with him -ahem- stimming inappropriately in the back seat on our last road trip!

We are heading to Nags Head this summer. Need to make travel arrangements for stopping on the way down and on the way back as our son will need time out of the van. Any helpful tips for our travel would be appreciated.8)
